Measles hits record high

25th February 2008

The highest number of people since records were started in 1995 were diagnosed with measles in 2007, according to the Health Protection Agency.

971 cases of measles were recorded in 2007, with 75% of cases found in London and the South-east. Mary Ramsay, an HPA consultant epidemiologist, said: "The rise in measles cases is of concern. Although MMR coverage is improving we know that large numbers of children are still not protected. Therefore we expect to see more outbreaks of measles in the future."
