Meningitis C virus stopped

21st April 2008

New figures have revealed a major breakthrough in the fight against meningitis C.

The annual report on immunisation has revealed that for the first time since records began, no meningitis C deaths were recorded in the past year among the under 19 age group. Since the introduction of vaccine in 1999, there has been a gradual decline in deaths but the last 12 months is the first recorded in which no teenagers are though to have died from the virulent form of meningitis.
