Meningitis outbreak in Sudan

19th February 2007

Health authorities in southern Sudan have reported 1,129 suspected cases of meningococcal disease including 96 deaths, a fatality rate of 8.5%, since the beginning of the year.

Between February 4 and 11, a total of 79 suspected cases including eight deaths were reported, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a statement February 15.

"However, delayed and irregular reporting as well as incomplete disaggregated population data are leading to difficulties in determining whether districts in these areas have reached the epidemic threshold," it said.

Cerebrospinal fluid specimens collected from the affected states had tested positive for Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A by latex test, it said.
