Mental health unit to close

17th December 2007

The NHS is to close the Henderson Hospital in Surrey, which offers unique help to people with complex mental health problems and severe personality disorders.

Psychiatrists say the decision by South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust will harm vulnerable patients. Doctors have pinned the blame on changes made by the government to funding arrangements. A year ago, the hospital received national funding and had a six-month waiting list but when funding passed to local NHS trusts, referrals dwindled.
