Merck loses Vioxx case

25th August 2006

In New Orleans a US federal court jury has awarded a former agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation $51m (£27m; 40m) in damages for suffering a heart attack after taking Vioxx (rofecoxib) for three years.

Merck had not warned doctors of the drug's possible side effects, said the jury. Merck faces more than 14 000 lawsuits related to Vioxx.
