Military bands should wear earplugs

29th September 2010

Military bandsmen have been ordered to wear earplugs to conform with health and safety laws by the Ministry of Defence.

In a move supported by the charity RNID, all military musicians will now be required to put in earplugs before playing their noisy instruments to protect their hearing. However, some band members have expressed concern that the use of ear plugs could impair their performance. Many musical instruments can reach volumes in excess of 100 decibels and could damage hearing over time.
