More suffer post-natal depression

The number of women who suffer post-natal depression after the birth of their babies has nearly doubled.

Experts previously estimated that around 10% of new mothers succumbed to post-natal depression but new research suggests the figure is closer to one in six.  Mental Health charity Mind has accused Mental Health Trusts of not focussing on new mothers – specialist mother and baby units are found in less than half of mental health trusts.  A spokeswoman for the charity said, "We've known for a long time that depressive illnesses are high for mothers."
