New benefit rules will drive mentally ill into poverty

27th October 2008

Mental health charities have warned that new benefit rules could force mentally ill people to live in poverty.

Campaigners estimate that around 50% of people who seek the employment and support allowance will be rejected or told to claim income support instead. Sophie Corlett, the director of policy at the mental health charity Mind, said: "The new benefit is system driven, hugely bureaucratic and is too inflexible to deal with the range and complexities of fluctuating mental health problems."
