New breast cancer test20th October 2011
Thousands of women could be spared unnecessary chemotherapy thanks to a new £200 test developed by British scientists that predicts whether or not their breast cancer will return after surgery.
The test - developed at the Institute for Cancer Research in London and the Royal Marsden Hospital and Queen Mary, University of London - uses technology already available in almost all NHS laboratories to estimate the risk of recurrence of the most common type of the disease, called oestrogen positive (ER+) breast cancer.
