New fertility laws approved

21st May 2008

MPs have voted against an amendment to fertility laws which would call for clinics to consider a child's "need for a father and mother" when giving treatment.

The new Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill will mean that a woman looking for fertility treatment "will no longer have to take into account the role of a father figure". MPs rejected the amendment by 292 votes to 217.
