New national child index welcomed

29th January 2009

The Royal College of Nursing has welcomed the launch of a national electronic child database that enables health practitioners to quickly identify which services a child is using.

The new system, called ContactPoint, will only be available to authorised staff who need it to do their jobs and will not include medical records. Those providing a sensitive service - in the fields of sexual health, mental health and substance abuse - will be required to seek informed consent from the young person before recording their contact details on it.
