New pain relief for hand and arm operations

9th August 2010

Doctors at Singleton Hospital in Swansea have developed a way to perform operations using nerve block instead of general anaesthetic.

The new technique is being performed as part of arm and hand surgeries. Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board said: "As patients don't need a general anaesthetic, they don't get side effects like drowsiness or nausea, and they don't face any of the risks of a general anaesthetic. Regional anaesthesia can also be used for patients who are not well enough to risk a general anaesthetic."
