New strain of norovirus dominant

9th January 2013

The Health Protection Agency has warned that a new variant of the winter vomiting bug has become the dominant strain sweeping the UK.

Latest figures showing a slowdown in rates of infection come as research has been published in Eurosurveillance describing the new variant of norovirus (genotype G11 – 4) called Sydney 2012, which was first seen in Australia but has also been seen in France, New Zealand, and Japan. It is not regarded as any more serious illness than others and the methods of managing cases and outbreaks are the same for any strain of norovirus.
