New substance misuse guidance

28th March 2007

New guidance for dealing with substance misuse has been issued by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Almost half of those aged 16 to 24 have used one or more illicit drug, it said. Young people who have been excluded from school, who have been in care, are known to offend or children of drug users are five times more likely to use illegal drugs than their peers.

The guidance calls for actively identifying drug use or those vulnerable to drugs and early intervention addressing areas like problem solving, relaxation and study skills.
