NHS Direct closure denied

10th September 2010

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has been accused of a climbdown over plans to scrap NHS Direct, by shadow health secretary Andy Burnham.

Mr Lansley said that he had not announced plans to scrap NHS Direct but just to phase out its telephone number. However, Mr Bunrham said that Mr Lansley's own department confirmed it was planning to scrap NHS Direct but "he now says all he wants to change is the phone number". The Royal College of Nursing has described the closure move as short-sighted and Unison welcomed the latest position.
