NHS efficiency savings targeted in pre-budget report

25th November 2008

The Chancellor of the Exchequer has said "billions of pounds of savings" are needed from the NHS and other public sector services.

The amount the government has to borrow will increase to £78 billion in 2008 and £118 billion in 2009. The NHS has been told it needs to ensure "3% efficiency savings" this year. The Chancellor made no mention of the NHS surplus, which was £1.8 billion in 2007/08.
