NHS faces five key challenges

1st March 2007

Engaging with clinicians and designing effective incentive systems are vital to the long-term future of the NHS, says a new report.

The Kings Fund has identified five challenges for the NHS in its new report Funding Healthcare: 2008 and beyond.

The report concentrates on securing a long-term future for the health service and the strategies it needs to cope with the lower financial growth expected to kick in after next year.

Alongside working with clinicians and providing meaningful incentives, the government must also take action to reduce variation in performance and clinical practice in the NHS, improve productivity and learn to measure what counts, said the report.
