NHS rewards scheme pilot

22nd July 2008

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has proposed that its surgeons participate in a reward-based scheme, designed to boost patient results.

Interviewed on Radio 4’s Today Programme, Professor Stephen Smith, the Trust's Principal, said the scheme would be "run by the surgeons and clinicians themselves. It’s an internal system of benchmarking against measures they deem appropriate." However the British Medical Association deemed the plans "far too simplistic".
