NHS 'smartcards' missing

8th February 2008

Several thousands “smartcards used by NHS staff to gain access to confidential patient records on computer systems have gone missing.

The loss was reported by GP magazine Pulse following the results of a Freedom of Information Act request to several NHS organisations, which suggested that the figure could be about 6,000. The organisation in charge of NHS computer systems, Connecting for Health, said that it was aware of 4,147 cards that were unaccounted for but it insisted they were of little use without PIN numbers.
