NICE in court challenge over osteoporosis treatment

19th January 2009

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is facing a High Court legal challenge in respect to its ruling on an osteoporosis treatment.

NICE guidance tells doctors to prescribe the least costly medication available to women who have early signs of the disease, although one in five cannot take the drug because of its severe side effects. The National Osteoporosis Society and the drug manufacturer Servier have argued that the decision is "unethical" and will contest it at the High Court.
