No blanket ban on baby milk ads

23rd November 2007

The government has said it will not issue a complete ban on the advertisement of formula baby milk.

Many charities had called for the ban as they wished to promote breastfeeding as the best way to feed newborn and older babies.

However, the government will issue some new restrictions on how manufacturers are able to promote milk for babies older than six months. Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said: "infant formula is not junk food".
