No drop in HIV among gay men

1st February 2013

The Medical Research Council and the Health Protection Agency have confirmed that the number of cases of HIV in gay and bisexual men has remained static over the past decade.

Dr Valerie Delpech, the HPA's head of HIV surveillance, said: "We are seriously concerned about the level of ongoing HIV transmission and the significant impact this is having within the MSM community. The most plausible explanation for these results is continuing unsafe sexual behaviour coupled with insufficient HIV testing, showing us just how vital safe sex programmes engaging MSM remain."
