Nurses stage strike

21st May 2007

Operating theatre nurses at the Barnsley Hospital in Yorkshire have staged a 24-hour strike over changes to their jobs as health managers try to cut the annual wage bill by £1.5m.

Among the plan by managers is reduced cover at night and moves to downgrade some theatre staff. Managers say the nursing structure at the hospital is “top-heavy? while the GMB unions say the proposals are an insult to staff. Talks between managers and the GMB have come to a halt.
