Obesity warning for NI

9th March 2012

Northern Ireland Health Minister Edwin Poots has launched a 10-year strategy to tackle obesity and warned that being overweight can cut a person’s life expectancy by nine years.

With about 1,000 people a year diagnosed as being obese in Northern Ireland, Mr Poots has announced the investment of more than £7m towards tackling the problem of obesity over the next three years. Figures show that in Northern Ireland 59% of adults are either overweight or obese and 8% of children aged 2-15 years were assessed as being obese.
