One day tumour op offer

3rd October 2007

Patients suffering from brain tumours in the UK could be offered one-day surgery under local anaesthetic on the NHS.

Under the procedure pioneered at University Hospital College, London, by Britain’s youngest female brain surgeon Dr Gelareh Zadeh, patients remain awake during the operation. The technique means they can be home the same day rather than staying in hospital for a week and it leads to a quicker recovery time. Doctors also believe using local rather than general anaesthetic makes operating easier.
