One in five drug users not aware they have hepatitis C

6th November 2014

According to Public Health England (PHE) around 20% of drug users in England are unaware they have hepatitis C.

PHE said in 2013 90% of the 13,570 people diagnosed with hepatitis C had injected drugs.

Hepatitis C can lead to liver cancer and can be spread through the blood of an infected person which is why drug users who share a needle are at risk.

PHE has called for interventions to flag up infections earlier to prevent the disease being spread.
