One in seven face breast cancer

4th June 2008

Experts have warned that if present health trends continue, one in seven women in the UK will develop breast cancer.

A study carried out on behalf of the Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre in Wythenshawe, Manchester, looked at 1,442 women who carried the high-risk genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. It found that by 2024 that one in seven women will be affected rather than the current one in 10, unless lifestyle changes are made. That figure compares with data from 1984 that predicted only one in 13 women would develop breast cancer.
