One-to-one cancer nurse care dropped

21st October 2010

Plans to improve cancer services and provide free prescriptions for people with long term conditions have been abandoned.

The move, in the comprehensive spending review, was because the coalition said Labour’s plans to introduce a one week cancer diagnostic waiting target and one-to-one nursing care for cancer patients were not affordable. NHS spending will increase by 0.1% above inflation each year, but the chancellor confirmed that up to £20bn of efficiency savings were still required over the four year period covered by the spending review.
