Online map tracks malaria

6th December 2006

29042006_malaria2.jpgAn online map which uses Google Earth to map communities at high risk of malaria could provide a valuable tool for policymakers.

According to an article published in the Public Library of Science Medicine, the open access Malaria Atlas Project aims to collate precise data on malaria around the world so policy-makers have the best possible information when making funding decisions.

The maps, which are also available in French and Spanish, will identify areas of drug resistance, mosquito species and outbreaks.

Researchers say they would still like to receive more data about malaria infections to add to the existing picture.

The map can be found at: http://www.map.ox.ac.uk/
