Opening hours audit scrapped

28th May 2008

Widespread opposition from GPs has forced the government to climb down over plans to audit practice opening hours.

Many Primary Care Trusts have abandoned the exercise because of the opposition. The Department of Health wanted PCTs collect detailed information on existing GP opening times to make sure that practices taking up the Extended Access DES offered ‘genuinely additional’ appointments. The BMA had urged GPs to boycott the audit after seeking legal advice which showed there was no precedent for such a request.
