Pain 'linked with low vitamin D'

Research has shown a possible link between a "low" level of vitamin D and "chronic pain" in women.


Around 10% of the population suffers chronic pain in the UK. Vitamin D is needed for bone health and is made by the body when sunlight hits the skin. It is also contained in eggs and oily fish.

The research, by Dr Elina Hyppönen and her team at the Institute of Child Health in London, appears in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.

The study showed that the connection only applied to women, which suggested that hormones might be concerned.

The team said more research was necessary in order to find out if vitamin D tablets could help prevent chronic pain.

The study looked at 7,000 male and female subjects who were aged 45 and lived across the country. People who smoked, did not drink, weighed too much or too little all had "higher" levels of chronic pain.

In the female subjects, their amount of vitamin D in the body appeared to affect pain levels.

The subjects whose vitamin D levels were between 75 and 99 mmol/litre - "a level deemed necessary for bone health" - showed the least amount of chronic pain, at around 8%.

The subjects with the lowest levels of 25 mmol/litre showed the "highest" amounts, at 14.4%.

Dr Hyppönen said more research was needed but added: "If I had chronic pain I would certainly check I was getting enough vitamin D."

Kate MacIver of the Pain Research Institute at Liverpool University cautioned: "Taking too high a dose of vitamin D supplements as a means of preventing or treating chronic pain could result in vitamin D toxicity and high blood calcium levels."

Bruce Hollis has shown in "Circulating Vitamin D3 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D in Humans: An Important Tool to Define Adequate Nutritional Vitamin D Status" the body only starts to store D3 when it's daily needs have been met in full.
I am male and suffered chronic pain for years.
Only when I raised my 25(OH)D status above 125nmol/l with 5000iu/daily/D3 PLUS regular full body sun exposure (UK weather permitting) did my pain levels subside.
