Parents 'risking children's eyesight'

18th August 2009

Research by the College of Optometrists has revealed that three-quarters of parents are putting their children's eye health in danger by letting them in the sun without appropriate sunglasses.

A poll of 2,000 people showed that almost 50% of parents were more concerned about the price of sunglasses than the protection they provided. Dr Susan Blakeney, optometric adviser at the College of Optometrists, said: "I am shocked to see that so many parents aren't ensuring that their child's eyes are protected in the sun, and am equally astounded to see that of those who do, many are opting for 'cheap and cheerful' over quality."
