Patient records sent to landfill

15th February 2008

Bolton Primary Care Trust has said that thousands of private patient records were "dumped in a landfill site" after an administrative error.

The PCT wrote to the 3,200 patients in order to explain what happened. The information was meant to be sent for shredding or burning, but ended up at a landfill site. PCT chief executive Tim Evans said: ‘We are sincerely sorry for this lapse in our usually strict procedures for ensuring that all patient information is stored and disposed of securely."
