Patient safety could be at risk from immigration change

14th May 2009

The British Medical Association has warned that patient safety could be put at risk because changes to immigration rules could force hundreds of junior doctors out of the NHS.

The BMA say reform of the tier one skilled migrant category was unfair on foreign medics because it meant doctors in the first two years of training would not be able to apply for the next stage. However, the Department of Health and the Home Office said the rules would ensure "only those we need come here to work".
