Patients die of thirst on hospital wards

8th October 2012

New figures released by the Office for National Statistics have shown 48 patients starved to death and 111 died of thirst in NHS hospitals last year.

The data also revealed that 21 people died of thirst and eight starved to death in care homes. Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director of Age UK, told the Telegraph the information was "deeply distressing" and added: "Hospitals and care homes must pick up on the warning signs of malnutrition and ensure that while older people are in their care they get all the help and support they need to eat and drink."
