Patients more likely to sue GPs

8th March 2013

The Medical Protection Society has warned that patients are more likely to sue their GP than ever before.

After analysing figures for the last two years, it found the number of claims that members had reported to the society had increased by 40% from 2011 to 2012. The MPS also reported a rise in the severity of claims being made against GPs. It noted that for cases involving catastrophic injury, such as brain damage arising from a missed diagnosis of meningitis, cases were now being settled for sums in excess of £6 million, compared to £3.5m a few years ago.
