Picture warnings for smokers

29th August 2007

Graphic images showing the dangers of smoking will be printed on all tobacco products sold in the UK by the end of 2009.

New regulations mean that 15 images will be displayed on products. Among them will be pictures of diseased lungs and text giving health warnings as moves to deter smokers is stepped up.

Health Secretary Alan Johnson said there was evidence from other countries that the new images would help people stop. The UK will become the first EU country to publish the pictures on all tobacco products.
