Pooled kidney transplant is successful

8th March 2010

The UK's first kidney surgery involving three recipients and three donors has been carried out.

Vicki Chapman, director of policy and strategy at the Human Tissue Authority, said: "These are the first transplants of their kind to happen in the UK. The HTA has to pay particular attention to these types of donation as the issues are particularly complex when more people and more centres are involved. The donors and recipients involved were assessed before the transplant went ahead to check they fully understood the risks involved and the donors were not under any pressure to donate."
