Prostate cancer drug hope

22nd July 2008

UK researchers say trials of a new drug, abiraterone, have shown it can decrease prostate tumours by up to 80%.

Patients were given the drug and then monitored for over two years. Lead researcher Dr Johann de Bono said the subjects "had very aggressive prostate cancer which...almost always proves to be fatal. We hope that abiraterone will eventually offer them real hope of an effective way of managing their condition and prolonging their lives. My vision is to make chemotherapy obsolete."
