Jon Lancaster the young racing driver who is being tipped to become a new British F1 driver has become an Ambassador for the charity YoungMinds, the voice for young people’s mental health and wellbeing. 1 in 10 children and young people aged 5 -16 suffer from diagnosable mental health disorders such as depression, self harm and eating disorders. YoungMinds is the only charity dedicated to improving their mental health and emotional wellbeing. Jon is supporting YoungMinds as he believes that more can be done in the supporting of young people with mental health problems.
On becoming an Ambassador for YoungMinds Jon said, “I am privileged and motivated in supporting YoungMinds, as there is so much more that can be done for the young people that have mental health problems. I want to inspire and influence them, I am a sportsman and in sport you have to be physically and mentally active, the way you relate to sport you can also use with your directives to life. I want to show these young people that sport is a great way to deal with the stresses and strains of growing up, and that it can prevent the difficult feelings they may be experiencing. I also want to call on the government and relevant bodies to provide more resources and assistance for these kids.”
Sarah Brennan YoungMinds Chief Executive said: “We are delighted Jon has chosen to support YoungMinds. Support from sportsmen such as Jon is vital for us to reach out and improve children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing, and will help demonstrate the importance sport can play in keeping young people mentally healthy.”
