Record level for organ transplants

The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has revealed that a record number of organ transplants were carried out last year, marking a rise for the seventh successive year.

Figures show that between 2011 and 2012, 3,960 transplants were carried out in the UK at a time that there has been an additional one million people signing up to the organ donor register – with 18.6 million people on it. There has been a 2% increase in organ donation from brain dead patients and in the last three years the rate of cornea donation has increased by 42%.
