Rise in liver cancer

6th December 2007

The British Liver Trust (BLT) says urgent action is needed to tackle the causes of liver cancer.

The warning follows government statistics which show the number of hospital admissions due to cirrhosis is up 104%, with 24,042 people in England admitted to hospital with cirrhosis in 2006. BLT chief executive Alison Rogers believes that prevention methods should include efforts to help control and prevent obesity and excessive alcohol consumption and see universal vaccination for hepatitis B and improved treatment services for liver disease sufferers.
