'Scan and save' trusts sign up

Around eighty NHS trusts in England have decided to use the GS1 "scan and save" system in order to track and trace surgical instruments.

The technology, produced by GS1 UK, works on similar principles to barcode scanning in supermarkets and allows instruments to be identified and tracked. Former health minister, Lord Hunt, said: “ We are recommending that both industry and the NHS should use the GS1 System for coding".
