School sports drive

16th July 2007

The government has assigned £100m to a new school sports drive aimed at reducing childhood obesity.

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown announced the plan, which aims to allow every child an hour of sport at school each day, on 13 July. He said that a "united team effort" would ensure a fitter country prior to the 2012 Olympics.

He said: "Whatever their natural ability and whatever their age sport and activity can make our children healthier, raise self-confidence and self-esteem."
