Scots drink a quarter more alcohol

21st July 2010

According to a report by NHS Health Scotland, Scottish adults drink 25% more alcohol than people in other parts of the country.

Scots consume the equivalent of two pints or two glasses of wine more per week than other Britons.

Another report found that 77% of alcohol was put out for sale at less than 50p a unit.

The first report looked at the sale of alcohol between 2005 and 2009. It showed that people living in Scotland preferred to drink in their own homes.

A contributing factor to home drinking was that alcohol bought from shops was "three times" less expensive than a drink purchased at a pub.

NHS Health Scotland's director of public health science, Dr Laurence Gruer, said increasing the cost of alcohol sold by retailers would help to stop people drinking too much.

The second report found that a male drinker only needed to buy £4.40 of cider to go over the government's RDA of 21 units, while a female drinker could buy only £3 to surpass the RDA of 14 units.

The report showed that 77% of all alcohol was put out for sale at under 50p a unit, 51% at 40p or under and 16% at 30p or under.

Dr Gruer said: "We know there are strong links between lower price and increased consumption - and between increased consumption and more alcohol-related problems of all sorts."

"In recent years, alcohol from off-sales has become relatively cheaper, encouraging many more people to drink harmful amounts."

It is useful to remember that the RDAs were not based upon, and are not backed up by, any scientific evidence - such statements made by Dr Gruer linked or associated with RDAs, are without value or meaning.
