Self-test kit warning issued

21st November 2012

New guidance on the use of self-test and self-diagnosis kits has been issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

While self-test kits are increasingly available for a variety of conditions including fertility, sexually transmitted infections and cancer the regulator says people should not rely upon them on their own, although it does acknowledge they have an important role to play in healthcare. The MHRA guidance provides advice on what to look out for before buying a kit, before using one and what to do with the results.
