Sitting at desk health hazard

4th December 2007

The British Chiropractic Association has published research which shows that 32% of people in the UK sit down for 10 or more hours every day.

50% of desk workers do not take a lunch break, putting them at risk of obesity and deep vein thrombosis. Nearly 60% of people in the UK work at a desk every day. The Health and Safety Executive says three-quarters of sick days are taken because of back problems.

Professor Marc Hamilton of the University of Missouri compares the risks of desk work with being "on a par with smoking... people...are unaware of the dangers of sitting down too much".
