Spine fluid test could spot Alzheimer's

23rd June 2011

Doctors are developing a test that uses spinal fluid to give vital early warning of the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

They hope it will distinguish everyday memory lapses from those likely to progress to dementia and would allow treatments to be prescribed in the initial stages, when they are most likely to be effective and give people more time to prepare for the future. The study has been published in the journal Neurology. Alzheimer's affects around 465,000 people in the UK.
