Stafford A&E to close at night

1st December 2011

The accident and emergency unit at Stafford Hospital is to close at night to address staffing levels.

Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust said the A&E unit would close from 10pm to 8am for three months in a move that chief executive Lynn Hill-Tout said would allow resources to be focused on the daytime. The trust said it had struggled to recruit qualified staff, partly due to negative publicity which saw the hospital have a higher-than-expected number of deaths between 2005 and 2008.
