State-of-the-art mortuary opens

20th March 2008

Home secretary Jacqui Smith has opened a £783,800 forensic mortuary in London that will be used exclusively for the post-mortem examinations of suspicious deaths.

The first of its kind, it can store more than 100 bodies and is suitable for mass fatalities. The Iain West Forensic Suite, which is an extension to the existing Westminster Public Mortuary, also features a bio-hazard post-mortem room and has a CCTV viewing area with a live link to the post mortem room for senior investigating officers to watch forensic pathologists at work.
